Fish Hunt Cook Tinker Fishing 

Every winter the Wildlife Resource Commission stocks trout in ponds around the area. It is a great way to give fishermen something to do when most fish are hard to catch in the area. I went trout fishing for a few hours and had some luck. I had a hard time deciding what recipe to use to cook my trout. Finally I decided on a southern classic. Found in most every restaurant in the area. Lemon Pepper fried trout!!!

Crappie are one of the most sought after freshwater game fish in North America. Due mostly to there mild flavored, white, flaky meat. They are wonderful table fair. Fried, baked, broiled, or blackened they are always delicious. Spring is the time of year crappie make their annual spawning run up in to the shallows. Here in NC that is normally around mid April. At this time they are much easier to catch than the rest of the year. Crappie normally stay in the cooler depths during the summer. When deep they are much harder to target. Spring's crappie spawn brings angles by the thousands to N.C. lakes. Spring crappie fishing has been a tradition for me for as long as I can remember. Very few years went by where I did not go. It has always been one of my favorite fisheries. It is hard to top the excitement of the peak of the spawn. Many times we have caught hundreds of crappie in a day. Often filling up coolers with delicious fillets for the family to enjoy. Crappie fishing during the spring spawn can be one of the easiest fisheries in the world. But one of the most frustrating. If you do not time your trip during the peak of the spawn. It can be very hard to locate the fish. They could be from 12 feet to 1 foot of water. Being able to find the fish during this time is what makes a good crappie fisherman.

One of the best eating fish that swim in the ocean is wahoo! Every time we go out wahoo is the fish everyone wants to catch. Their white, mild flavored, and slightly dense texture makes them amazing table fair. With a freezer full of deer and fish wahoo is always the first to go. Ask anyone that offshore fishes and they will tell you their wahoo story. One of the most highly prized game fish on the whole eastern sea board. As well as one of the fastest. Wahoo can be caught trolling ballyhoo or high speed trolling lures. On this particular trip all the wahoo came off ballyhoo on the planner board. We tried high speed trolling on the way out with no results. A few time a year we always try to make our way to the Gulf Stream. On this trip we went out for 18 hours. Unfortunately I was focused more on getting the fish in the boat than capturing them on film. I still managed to get a few on film. When I was ten or twelve, I would get so excited about our next fishing trip. I would spend hours and hours tying up rigs for my Dad and I to use. We always had twenty or thirty rigs in sandwich bags ready to go. My Dad was constantly buying hooks and swivels, but we always had rigs! As I have grown and learned many different knots and techniques. I still use many of the ones I used as a kid. Most of them I can tie with my eyes closed, in the dark, and in a rush to catch the next one. They have been tried and proven for 25 or more years. I can’t remember the first surf rig I used, but I couldn’t have been more than six or seven years old. I started tying my own at eight or nine. I loved learning how to improve my fishing skills. I decided to put surf drum rigs and grouper rigs together in this video. Mainly because they are the same two knots. Drum rigs are short. Only about 6 inches of 100 pound mono. Grouper rigs can be from 4 to 20 feet. My preference is 130 pound mono. In the past I have lost some big grouper to the rocks using 80 and 100 pound. They swim in and it’s over. With 130 I can get them out. By just pulling as hard as I can or giving them slack. After a minute or two they will swim out on there own. Then your leader is still strong enough to keep them from going back. Obviously the main goal is to never give them enough to get in the rocks in the first place, but it happens. Grouper, in my opinion, are one of the strongest fish in the ocean. I know in a lot of areas 130 is just to heavy. With clear water and a lot of fishing pressure you have to downsize. Here off the North Carolina Coast I have had a lot of luck with this rig. I have no idea if there is any interest in these types of videos or not. This is one type of video I like taking the time to make. Fishing is a passion and I enjoy sharing the little I know with others. Spring bream fishing is one of my favorite fisheries. They are wonderful to eat and so much fun for the whole family to catch. If it is in a lake or in a pond. They are always a blast to catch! In late spring bream move to the shallows to make their nests. This is the time when it is the easiest to target the big ones. On their nest they are often visible. Also they will protect their nest from anything that may feed on their eggs. Making it much easier to target them. Bream can be bluegill, or shell crackers, or a few other species depending on where you are located. Almost all of these make wonderful table fair. White, flaky, and mild flavored meat make them a favorite for many. Bream can be found in lakes or ponds from the deep south to the northern most states. Making them one of the most common game fish. I grew up catching bream mostly for catfish bait. Some of the biggest catfish I have ever caught were on fresh cut bream. Ranging from 50-60 pounds. In the lakes in N.C. finding bream big enough to make a good meal can be challenging. Therefore they were not commonly table fair for us. When we caught enough big ones to have enough for a meal it was always a treat.
